Tudor Black Bay 41

Yes, Tudor watches offer a great value to cost ratio. To shed light on Tudor’s value we need to look at the luxury watch industry as a whole and its evolution. In the fashion industry it’s very common for luxury brands to have a small sister company that targets the lower end of the market.

The Tudor watch brand, established in 1926, was created by Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex. His goal was to offer an affordable alternative to Rolex that was reliable, fashionable and maintained the precision Rolex is famous for. His plan worked, the association with Rolex gave the brand credibility and it did very well at the lower end of the market.

To keep costs low, the vast majority of companies in the same market as Tudor use outsourced mechanisms. Tudor followed the same strategy for many years. Developing in-house movements is extremely expensive and takes years or R&D. Over time it became thought of as a “poor man’s” Rolex that mimicked the Rolex designs but outsourced the watch movement.

In the mid 2000’s Tudor did a complete overhaul focused on technology and design. It began producing its own in-house movements and introduced new models with their own names. The new branding differentiates Tutor from Rolex offering high quality timepieces aimed at a younger demographic. Tudor has forged a new identity with interesting color schemes and often looking to vintage designs for inspiration.

The collection of watches now includes two highly successful dive watches: the Black Bay, a nod to the vintage Tudor Submariner and the Pelagos with a more contemporary vibe.

Another popular collection is the North Flag with an attractive retro style and a very impressive in-house movement, possibly the best available for under $4000.

A major advantage is that Rolex can share its research and processes when it comes to manufacturing and making movements that are reliable and durable.

Tudor offers excellent value for the money when compared to other watch manufacturers in the same market. A Tudor watch is a sturdy, reliable, stylish timepiece. In many cases this includes in-house movements. These watches are made to exact specifications and quality standards unparalleled by Tudor’s competitors.
